Meneka trained as an actor at the Lee Strasberg Institute in London and has had the privilege to have worked with directors such as David Yates, Mike Leigh and Tim Supple.
Meneka moved into filmmaking in 2001 and wrote and directed the 35mm short ‘The Audition’, which premiered at the BFI Southbank. It opened Mira Nair’s film ‘Hysterical Blindness’ at the Bite the Mango film festival in Bradford and screened at festivals in India, UK, Ireland, US and South East Asia.
She went on to write and direct her first feature film ‘Little Box of Sweets’ produced by my sister Sheenu under the banner of OceanSonic Pictures. It was shot entirely in locations in North India. The film was screened in the Breakthrough section at (LUFF) in 2006.
In 2008 the film screened around the UK including London’s ICA and Showroom Cinema in Sheffield followed by screenings in Southampton, Chichester and Bradford, garnering top reviews including being in the Top 5 Films of The Week in the Evening Standard.
She was awarded the Grand Jury Award at The South Asian International Film Festival, New York in 2008 for Emerging Talent and the film also won Best Music at the same festival
In 2007 she was one of eight filmmakers selected by Film London for the Mayor’s Trip to India with the original idea of my second feature script ‘Summer of Our Lives’.
‘Summer Of Our Lives’ was one of two scripts selected by the UK Film Council for Tribeca All Access 2010. Followed by selection in November 2010 for the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum. (See video) The script was also selected by B3 Feature Lab, which included a workshop with director Steve McQueen.
In 2008 she was part of TSD (think-shoot-distribute) London’s BFI Film Festival initiative for emerging UK filmmakers.
She attended a two-week course on Directing with Mark Travis in Poland. Mackendrick on Filmmaking: An intro into the craft of a Director at the London Film School with Paul Cronin.
Currently she is the Director/Producer on her second feature film ‘Summer of Our Lives’ Associate Produced by Sandy Lieberson (ex-chairman Film London) which is being shot in 2016.
